Children of Edward Lawrence and Josephine Zahm

Charlotte Katherine, born June 13, 1904 in Buffalo NY.  On January 15, 1949 she married Harold Vincent Kane born July 17, 1896 in Buffalo, NY.  He was the son of Timothy Kane and Ida Bowden.  He was a private in World War I, died January 9, 1951, leaving no heirs.  Charlotte assumed the letter “G” as her middle initial after her marriage to Harold.  Thereafter, for the balance of her life she signed herself as Charlotte G instead of Charlotte K.

On April 29, 1967 she married Arthur E. Beucler, born June 6, 1898 in Troy NY.  Son of Edward C. Beucler and Eugenia H. Gyss.  Arthur died less than a year later, March 7, 1968, leaving no heirs.  He had a son by a previous marriage who died as a small boy.

Arthur is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, lot 971, Section V1, Cheektowaga, NY.  Harold is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawana, NY, Lot 428, Sec AA.


Charlotte died February 10, 1971.  She is buried with her father, mother and younger brother Arthur in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lot 1319, Sec A, Cheektoawaga, NY.  She died of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Lawrence Mathias, born September 16, 1906 in Buffalo, NY; died November 28, 1984 – age 78.  He moved to Baltimore, MD in March 28, 1935 during the Great Depression to find work at the General Motors Plant.  In 1937, he married Catherine M. Lipa, born August 27, 1917.  They had a daughter Mary Gloria  (see separate page) born July 20, 1938 in Baltimore, MD.  They divorced in 1943.

On August 28, 1943, he married Dorothy Mathilda Plumhoff, born January 16, 1916, in Baltimore MD.  She is the daughter of Lawrence Plumhoff and Emma Busekist.

Dorothy worked for Hutzler Brothers, a Baltimore department store from 1966 to 1982 when she retired.

Kathleen Leola, born August 1, 1944 in Baltimore, MD died January 24, 1999 – age 54.

Dorothy Mary born November 25, 1948 in Baltimore MD (Thanksgiving Day)

Lawrence is buried in Glen Haven Memorial Park, Lot #114A, Plot #1, Gethsemane Garden, Section C, Glen Burnie, MD.  He died of cancer of the colon and liver.

Dorothy Gerwitz died October 10, 1993.  She is buried next to Lawrence at Glen Haven.  She died of cardiac, intestinal and pulmonary complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Catherine Anne, born July 31, 1909 in Buffalo, NY.  On June 2, 1936 she married Florian Bernard Seyfried (Known as “Si”) born October 15, 1909 in Buffalo, NY, son of Charles Seyfried and Helen gill.

James Edward, born July 20, 1939 in Buffalo, NY

John Charles, born September 10, 1942 in Buffalo, NY

Michael Raymond, born February 26, 1946 in Buffalo, NY.

They all moved to Wyoming, NY in December 1949.  They owned and operated a large store called the Wyoming Food Center.  The building was about 125 years old when they bought it – it was built around 1920 or shortly after.  At one time housed and printed the first newspaper named the Wyoming Valley Era.

Si was assistant mayor of the village in 1941 and 1952.  He was listed as a volunteer fireman.  He died in December 1981.

At one time, before moving Wyoming, Catherine also worked for the NY telephone Co.

Leola Christine, born October 14, 1911 in Buffalo, NY.  On September 25, 1936, she married Henry Edward Eberle, born November 1, 1900 in Buffalo, NY.  He is the son of Henry Edward Eberle and Madeline Goergen.   He died March 9, 1965 leaving no heirs.  He is buried in the U.G. & F.R.C. Cemetery, Lot 29, Section 12 ½, Cheektowaga, NY.

All his working life Henry was in the glass industry.  In his trade, he was known as the “glass man’s glass man” (See following page.)

For almost 30 years, Leola worked for the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and the NY Telephone Co.  She was service operator when she retired in October 1966.

Leola died November 21, 1996 of an apparent heart attack.  She had previously suffered with colon cancer and lung cancer.

We seem to be a telephone company family.  We have two cousins, Marie Gerwitz Maday, who used to work at NY Telephone Co and her brother Edwin “Buddy” Gerwitz who still works there.  Our niece Mary Eleanor Gerwitz worked there until 1972 and our nephew, John C. Seyfried is with AT&T in Rochester, NY.

Edward Albert, born September 5, 1914 in Buffalo, NY.  On July 27, 1940, he married Gertrude Agnes Collins, born March 24, 1918 in Buffalo, NY.  She is the daughter of Thomas J. Collins and Mae J. O’Hara.

Edward enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1933 to 1941. He received his discharge as carpenters mate 3rd class. He was an engineer for the builder of the aircraft known as The Blackbird which is used by the Air Force for spy missions over Russia.

Shirley Gertrude born December 9, 1945 in Buffalo, NY

Jean Shirley, born June 24, 1953 in Buffalo, NY

For many years Edward was a regular blood donor.  He lost some of his records and is unable to say just how many pints he gave but he estimates that up to 1970 he gave between 50 and 60 pints.  That would be 7 to 9 gallons.  This is quite a lifeline.  He is still giving.

UPDATE:
Edward and Gert lost their home and were seriously injured in a fire caused by a gas leak in their home on June 28, 1995.  Edward passed away on July 9, 1995 as a result of his injuries.  Gert followed him on August 10, 1995.  After 56 years, they are together forever.

Harold Gerard, born November 20, 1916 in Buffalo, NY.  On August 19, 1944, he married Patricia Helen Huebschwerlen born March 7, 1923 in Buffalo, NY daughter of Dr, Arthur Huebschwerlen and Eleanor O. Dumphy.

Harold enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1942, World War II as Engineer Gunner.  Based in Attu, in the Aleutian Islands with the 77th Bomb Squadron (M) of the 11th Air Force.  He flew many missions over Japanese territory and eastern Siberia.  He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.  He received his discharge in November 1945 as Staff Sgt.

Daniel Arthur, born August 12, 1957 in Buffalo, NY

Kris Edward, born January 15, 1961 in Buffalo, NY.  Died Nov. 3, 1995 of AIDS in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  He was cremated and his ashes scattered in the ocean.

Karen Marie, born August 17, 1962 in Buffalo, NY.

Harold died on his 68th birthday, November 20, 1984.  He was buried in U.G. & F.R.C. Cemetery in Pine Hill, Cheektowaga, NY, Section 14, Lot #74, Grave NW.

Arthur Anthony, born September 26, 1922 in Buffalo NY.  Died February 8, 1940 – age 17.  Injured at birth, he was an invalid all his life.  He was a sweet boy and was loved by the whole family.  God took him early.  Thank God.

He is buried with his father, mother and sister, Charlotte, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lot 1319, Sec. A, Cheektowaga, NY.
