Gerhard Gerwitz and his Brothers and Sisters

Gerhard, born June 4, 1831, in Weisental, German and came to America in 1853.  He bought his farm in the Ashford Hills in 1870 and served in the Civil War.  In 1862, he married Sophia Schumacher.  She was born December 25, 1838 in Ainsiler, Germany.  Her mother’s name was Shingler.  Nothing more is known.

Gerhard died August 14, 1919 – Age 89.  Sophia died September 9, 1901 – age 63. They are both buried in St. John’s Cemetery in West Valley, NY.

Gerhard’s brothers and sisters were all born in Germany:

Lorenz, the eldest brother was born in 1822. He married Scholastica Klump (a descendant of the royal family) and came to America about 1840 or shortly thereafter.  They settled in what was known as Boston Corners, NY now Boston.  He died in 1907.  She died sometime after 1866 which is the year her last child was born.  They are both buried in St. John’s Cemetery in West Valley, NY.

Fredoline, another brother, birth date unknown, never came to America, but his daughter, Mary did.  She married Matthew Schriner.  She was born in Onsbach, Baden, German in 1860 and died in Eden NY in 1953 – age 93.

Rosina, the eldest sister was born in 1831 and died in 1890 – age 69.  She married Christ Fox.  She is buried in Springville, NY.

Ruffina, born in 1821, died in 1890 – age 81.  She married Constantine Benz.  She is buried in Hamburg, NY.

Carolyn, born in 1841, died 1927 – age 86.  She married Anthony Erhard.  She is buried in Hamburg, NY.


Celia, birth date unknown.  She married Frank Boschert and moved to Illinois.
